Whistler Revisited

For our big winter ski trip this year, and my 34th birthday, Hans and I returned to Whistler, BC for a week of fun in the snow! The Olympic Rings were a glow downtown and the town was decorated top to bottom with wonderful holiday lights which made it really festive.

We stayed in a great hotel just off the main strip that had a balcony with a view of Whistler mountain and was complete with a kitchenette and a murphy bed.

We tore up the slopes of Whistler and Blackcomb downhill skiing for two days, enjoying hot cinnamon tea while riding the gondolas around and up the mountains.

We made it to the summit of Whistler to see Inukshuk (the stone mountain mascott), but visibility was poor and we were not able to see the amazing mountain views we enjoyed last year on the blue bird days we were blessed with during our Honeymoon.

Of course after our downhill adventures we had to warm up and refuel at our favorite brew pub at the base of the mountain, the Irish pub Dubh Linn Gate. As usual, the Asian pork lettuce wraps and beers on tap were amazing!

We also spent 3 days cross country skiing all around the miles of trails at Lost Lake. I'm proud to say we dominated the black diamonds, even in some very slick conditions with the wet weather.

On our final day of skiing we were lucky enough to see the sun and enjoy the beautiful views on the trails at the perimeter of Lost Lake.

On our way home we decided to break up the drive by enjoying a weekend with my old grad school buddy, Vivian, and her husband, David, in Seattle. We had a great time hiking to the beach and touring the sound and surrounding suburbs.

While Vivian and I had fun making a Vietnamese classic dish for dinner, Hans and David geeked out playing Scyth together for several hours. It was the perfect end to an awesome trip!

We are really hoping to make Whistler an annual ski vacation site! Maybe next year we'll be lucky enough to share it with our future adopted child.
